Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2013

It's that time of year again! The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is basically like Christmas in July for us fashionistas. In my opinion, however, these sales have deteriorated in quality over the years. Still, there are some great basics to stock up on, and the beauty deals - HELLO - are amazing.

Early access for cardholders started on the 10th at 8:30 AM. Naturally, like the dedicated shopper I am, I woke up early and groggily headed over to my Nordies to scope the goods. The sale was kind of hush hush this year - probably some PR ploy to generate more buzz. I first headed over to the shoe department. I love Kinvara sneakers, but sadly there were no deals. I was underwhelmed by the shoe collection. Nothing tempted me in the slightest. Next, I headed over to the beauty department, where I snagged some of my beloved classics - namely Kate Somerville skincare and a YSL touche eclat set. All in all, I wasn't that impressed with the sale. I've heard that some products are mass produced by the designers specifically for the Anniversary Sale, and are therefore, of lesser quality. What did you all scoop up? Any hits or misses?

1. Trina Turk 'Antonia' leather top - $259.90 - after sale $398
2. Kate Somerville 'Kate's Essentials' Kit - $98 - $204 value
3. YSL 'Must Have' Set - $75 - $127 value
4. MAC 'Illustrated Lip Bag' in Nude - $39.50

Newport weekend

This past weekend, I traveled to Newport, Rhode Island with my best friend, Sue, to visit our sorority sister, Liza. ROAD TRIP! Liza, Sue, & I were all in the same A-Chi-O pledge class. Liza is a great friend, & although we don't see each other often, we try to keep in touch as much as possible. She recently bought her own home in RI. I brought her cute little mini decorative lanterns from Pottery Barn as a housewarming gift along with some peaches from the farm stand. I originally intended on bringing up some fresh Jersey tomatoes, but they're not quite in season yet. It was so fun to catch up with our old friend, enjoy time at the beach, eat good food, & see the sights.

After driving up to Liza's on Saturday, we headed to the beach at Narragansett. Unfortunately, the weather has been ultra funky in the Northeast lately - overcast and foggy - but thankfully it never rained! We finished off the day with a yummy Italian dinner in Providence & headed to the bar to meet her boyfriend, Nick.

On Sunday, we woke up early & headed to Newport. Newport has the most magnificent homes perched on cliffs. After exploring the village, we stopped for a bite to eat at Brick Alley. It's a cute little pub with cheery yellow awnings. I joked with Liza that I was going on a lobster roll tour & needed to sample the local fare. Boy did she deliver! The lobster roll at Brick Alley is one of my all time favorites - highly recommended!

The lobster roll at Brick Alley. Definitely in my top 5.

We also decided to take a tour of one of the Vanderbilt summer homes called The Breakers. It is unbelievably majestic. Everything is incredibly ornate - from the marble accents, to the platinum (yes!) wall coverings, to the mosaic glass ceilings. It was fascinating to tour the home and learn about the family. This was such a fun trip, and I can't wait to come visit again!
